As a retired educator and entrepreneur, Cassandra Mmabatho Hawkins has been deeply influenced by Frederick Douglas’s quote, “It is easier to build strong children than repair broken adults.” With a rich experience of over 29 years in education, specifically teaching Language Arts, and 11 years in mission work, Dr. Hawkins was honored as a VIP member in 2020 by P.O.W.E.R (Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized). Her academic background in Speech, Theatre, and Communications enables children to articulate themselves and fosters their creative problem-solving skills. Dr. Hawkins, who holds a Doctorate in Ministry, takes pleasure in teaching bible stories that contribute to character development and spiritual growth in children. Beyond her extensive commitments, she is particularly enthusiastic about directing stage plays and musicals that guide children, teenagers, and young adults in making optimal choices.”

“I am an educator with experience in both Special and General Education, having taught 1st and 2nd grades in Special Education, as well as 4th and 5th grades in Middle School. I’ve also provided supplemental support for 9th and 10th graders who required additional assistance. During the pandemic, I transitioned to online teaching using Google Classroom breakout rooms. I retired in June of 2022 from a school serving low-income families. My passion lies in teaching students across all grades. Here at Brainfood Academy, I’ll be instructing Language Arts and Social Studies for grades 1-5 and High School, as well as Social Studies and Science for grades 3 and 4. If necessary, I’ll also be teaching Math for grades 1-4.”

“Meet Ms. Starling: An Educator at Brainfood Academy.”
I am a Graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in science. The majority of my experience is as a specialized teacher in the areas of reading and math at the elementary level. I love to be able to help students develop a love of reading and math! I will be teaching first graders reading and math skills. In reading I will cover: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Fluency, Handwriting, Grammar and Punctuation. Math is where we will learn: Counting and Cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. In Fourth grade, I will be teaching math. Some of those skills include: Numbers/Operations in Base Ten, Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Numbers/Operations – Fractions and Decimals, Measurement and Data, Geometry, and Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving. Greetings, everyone. I’m Ms. Wendy, and together with Felix, we’re set to embark on a learning journey this year at Brainfood Academy. I honed my skills as a special education teacher at the University of Hawaii from 2018 to 2020 and have been working with elementary grade students since 2017. I also bring to the table three years of tutoring experience in basic math and language arts, and I’ve taught Conversational Cantonese to elementary grade children for the same duration. I’m well-versed in online teaching, with three years of experience using the Zoom platform. Now, let’s dive into some fun facts about me.”
“I’m a happily married individual, a proud pet parent to four dogs and a cat, and a resident of the beautiful state of Hawaii. I have a passion for cooking, singing karaoke, and spending quality time with my dogs. We believe in making learning enjoyable and always strive to infuse fun into my classroom to spark students’ enthusiasm for learning. I have a fondness for sushi and my favorite color is green. At Brainfood Academy, I, along with my assistant Felix (a stuffed animal), will be teaching Grade 1 Math. The key topics we’ll explore this year include: 1. Number sense and operations (counting, addition, subtraction, etc.) 2. Measurement and data (comparing and ordering objects, understanding graphs and charts) 3. Geometry (2 and 3-dimensional shapes) 4. Patterns and Relationships (related to numbers, shapes, objects, etc.).”
